What's happening with the Australian BabyDiab Study?

The BabyDiab Study has undergone several changes and difficulties in the last year. Participants and their parents may be aware that there have been significant delays in the collection of blood for the Study. This has been due to a lack of research funds for staff, which has curtailed home visits and collections for the past year.  It has been a very unsatisfactory situation for our volunteer families, and we apologize for the inconvenience and uncertainty caused.

We are currently looking into hiring additional staff. However, funding for research nurses would not be sufficient to allow home visits. Instead we can arrange for you to have the blood collected by your local pathology service. The pathology service will then forward this onto us at the hospital. All of this would be at no cost to you. We hope to begin this service within 3-4 months.

A letter has been sent out to all participants in the BabyDiab study, to ascertain whether they are happy to continue in this Study. For those of you wanting to continue in the Study, we will be in contact with you mid-year, and updates will also be posted on this website. If you are in the study and have not received a letter, please contact Tammy Allen on 03 9342 7191 - a few letters seem to have gone astray, and if you have moved in the last year, we may not be up to date with your details.

We remain totally committed to the Baby Study.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss anything further with us please don't hesitate to contact Peter Colman (03 9342 7428) or (Prof.) Len Harrison (03 9345 2460).
